Allen started drinking when the opportunity presented itself at work. From that point on he began
experimenting with drugs and continued to drink, often blacking out. "My life started to spiral, to take some drastic turns, in terms of how I felt about myself. But that didn't stop me from indulging or seeking the escape that it gave me. When I got high, all of my problems went away for that time."

After getting drunk the first time she ever drank, Brenda woke up incredibly sick but was anxious to do it again. She says, "That's what addiction is. It's insanity. It makes no sense, and you can't wait to do it again." She tried every drink and drug for years afterward, regardless of the outcome. Brenda continued to struggle with addiction to alcohol and drugs, after several periods of sobriety and treatment. Once Brenda chose to walk out her sobriety with the help of ongoing treatment and daily meetings, she had to learn how to cope with real life, without the medication of drugs and alcohol. "It's almost as if I've lived two completely different lives. I have this life in the past of this broken, beaten, lost individual who had no hope and no future. The first time Pat drank he got drunk. It was the 7th grade. From that time on, he drank to get drunk. As his addiction grew stronger, Pat knew that if his behavior continued he wouldn't live to be 30, but he couldn't bring himself to stop drinking. Even after trying to stop cold turkey and having a seizure, Pat minimized the situation to hurt family members.
"In my mind, it was the alcohol and drugs that were keeping my life together, not blowing it apart. I could not imagine living without alcohol and drugs."

When Pat went to treatment at the urging of his father, he was convinced he wouldn't be there more than a day, because he didn't need help. After being told he wasn't going to be allowed to go back to college, he was given the option to stay for one day without using, or to go live on the streets.
"That began a day-at-a-time journey that has served me all the way until day. The first meeting‚ for the first time I was around people I felt understood me."
